The Parable of the Kava Root

by Austin Seraphin on September 20, 2008

As I noted in my last blog entry, a friend has gone in the hospital. On her twitter page, she wrote that friends are never there when you need them the most, a sentiment with which I and no doubt you can identify.

Recently, I had nothing to help me relax and enjoy the night…or so I thought. A friend brought up Kava in a conversation, and that got me thinking. For those who don’t know, Kava refers to a Hawaiian root with strong relaxant properties. I wrote the following poem years ago while under Her influence:

Kava Honey

We met
Feeling happy
Or needing to feel happy
Relaxed
Or needing to relax

Honey
Your taste numbed my lips
Your pepper prickled my throat
Your Earthen manner showed me love
Showed me myself

Content
Mellow in your presence
Relaxed in your caress
Happy in your gaze
Perfect in our image

Together
Five minutes takes a moment
The moment feels suspended
The motion feels extended
If we want to move at all

Gravity
The desire will remain
Does matter really matter
On this painful playful plain
The voice of an angel returns

Anyways, I remembered that I had a big old bag of dried Kava root lying around. Excitedly I found it, and to my delight, found that it had not lost any of its potency. Sometimes, we have a friend literally right in front of us the whole time, and just do not notice, or forget. Remember your friends!
